A press conference on the conduct and results of the joint border guard operation “Carpathians-2021” was held in the press center of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration.

The operation has been conducting since July, 4 in Chernivtsi, Zakarpattia and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, where there has been significant activity of illegal elements at the border. “However, the leader in the number of illegal activities, especially in the movement of tobacco products is Chernivtsi region. During joint actions in this area 317 boxes of smuggled tobacco, and 56 boxes were confiscated in the Zakarpattia region,” stated during a press conference Oleksii Havel, the First Deputy Chief of the Western Regional Directorate of the State Border Service - Chief of Staff.

Colonel Havel stressed that today criminal elements use all possible means to carry out their criminal plans. They involve small and unmanned aerial vehicles, off-road vehicles, use radio silencers, photo traps to track border patrols, thermal imagers, radios and more.

During “Carpathians” JBO, interaction with border guards of neighboring countries is carried out more closely. Ukrainian border guards resumed joint patrols with colleagues from Hungary and Slovakia. For greater efficiency of the service, the placement of border guards in a checkerboard pattern has been agreed with the Romanian side.

To combat crime effectively, JBO “Carpathians 2021” has a wide and prolonged range of measures, both at the border and in the rear areas of Ukraine. Representatives of various law enforcement, force and fiscal bodies of Ukraine are involved in it.

As part of the operation, border guards have already presented 577 border patrols together with representatives of other bodies involved. The measures taken have paid off. As part of the Carpathians 2021 JBO, 137 people were detained for crossing the border illegally, including 106 illegal migrants. Also, during the operation, 7 stolen cars, 54 foreign and invalid documents were revealed, goods worth over UAH 3.2 million were detained. Oleksii Havel stressed that during the operation, some indicators increased significantly. “During the operation “Carpathians-2021”, which concerns illegal migrants, this figure has doubled compared to the same period last year, and tobacco - 1.8 times,” stated the first deputy head of the Western Regional Directorate of the State Border Service.

During the joint operation, 25 cases of airspace violations were also recorded. Representatives of operative-search and analytical units in cooperation with border patrols help to counteract air smugglers, and the other day the Air Force lifted a MiG-29 battle-plane to forcibly land border trespassers on an AN-2 aircraft. Also, with the involvement of the State Border Guard Service aircraft, places have been identified that smugglers can use to take off and land small and unmanned aerial vehicles.

“Carpathians 2021” Operation is currently underway. The authorities involved already have developments that will further help to combat crime at the border more effectively. “We have already developed a base with other law enforcement agencies, with customs authorities, in particular on illegal elements that use vehicles on Europlates. We are also increasing our engineering forces and resources so that crime at the border can be punished,” Oleksii Havel said.

The conference was also attended by Deputy Head of the Zakarpattia Regional State Administration Ihor Shynkariuk, Head of the Migration Police Department of the NPU in the Zakarpattia Region Mykhailo Hustei and First Deputy Battalion Commander of the National Guard of Ukraine Andrii Halytskyi.
